-
Help cities understand their impacts on nature, set improvement targets based on scientific evidence and monitor their progress.
- Methodology:
-
Participating cities must complete the urban nature index (UNI) every 1-5 years.
For each period, cities will select indicators from the index within each of the six proposed themes: consumption, human pressure, habitat, species, nature’s contribution to people, and governance.
The recommended number of indicators a city must complete is determined by its scale and resources/capabilities.
Cities may choose to complete the indicators at a more advanced level and exceed the minimum indicated for their category, either by completing additional indicators and/or by completing indicators at a higher level.
- Opportunities and limitations:
-
Although local governments are the main intended users of this tool, the results that are generated will be useful to anyone interested in the relationship between cities and nature, and its implications for human health and well-being.
The capacity assessment questionnaire could be useful for a city that wants to determine its capacity and, by extension, the recommended number of indicators to be completed.
- Indicators:
-
Amount of garbage produced per person. Greenhouse gas emissions per person associated with energy use. Water consumption per person. Level of noise pollution. Level of urban expansion in the last 5 years. Level of light pollution. Level of water contamination. Risk level of invasive species. Number of initiatives for the restoration of terrestrial and marine habitats.
