La Diputació de Barcelona promou la creació d'entorns virtuals per treballar de forma col·laborativa, compartir i gestionar coneixement distribuït mitjançant diverses eines de participació (blogs, fòrums, wikis, xats...).
Les comunitats de pràctica fan possible el treball en xarxa entre els tècnics dels municipis de Barcelona. La majoria de comunitats són d'accés restringit, encara que poden tenir certs continguts oberts a tothom.
